Cost benefit analyses can be used to answer questions such as, “What are the costs and benefits of wildfire reduction projects?” A cost benefit analysis is a systematic approach often used to evaluate alternatives to solving a problem, especially to find the best solution or policy.

1. The project, policy, or set of alternatives must be clearly defined as a set of parameters and goals.
2. All costs associated with a project should be accurately estimated.
3. All benefits associated with a project should be accurately estimated.
4. The final recommendation should be clearly stated.

1. Define or revise a project parameter or goal.
2. Estimate or revise a cost.
3. Estimate or revise a benefit.
4. Determine the ratio or ratios of benefits versus costs.
5. Make a recommendation for the project.
